Julie Bernard

Dr. Julie Bernard joined the School of Environment, Enterprise and Development at the University of Waterloo in January 2025. Previously, she was a postdoctoral scholar at the Sustainable Finance Lab at Ivey Business School, where her research focused on understanding and facilitating the replication and scaling of a highly innovative Canadian financial product that applies finance to nature-based carbon mitigation. Her research has been funded by various organizations, including Carbon Solutions @ Western and the Canadian Academic Accounting Association (CAAA). She earned her Ph.D. from Université Laval in 2022.

Her research interests include sustainable finance, responsible investment and shareholder activism, with a particular focus on the integration of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) criteria, proxy voting, and their role in the fight against climate change. Outside the lab, Julie enjoys trail running, hiking, canoeing, and cross-country and Nordic skiing. She is also involved in Accounting for Impact.
